Music Class for Big Kids

Eenie Meenie Music offers Rhythm Kids classes for kids 4-8 years old

In each weekly music class, we drum, sing, move, and play to rhythms inspired by musical traditions around the world, from West African Gahu, to Japanese Taiko, to Brazilian Samba, just to name a few. We often use drums, but Rhythm Kids is much more than a drumming class. Students learn to compose, choreograph, and conduct as they play—and play with!—a variety of musical instruments and movement props: West African djembe drums, percussion instruments, scarves, stretchy bands, and, the most important instruments of all, their voices and their bodies. As your big kid learns to think and create like a musician, they’ll also build musical connections to each other- and the global community. Classes include:

  • immersion in the musical language of many cultures

  • playful music games with rules

  • opportunities to lead, balanced with opportunities to collaborate

  • deep exposure to complex, fun, and rockin' music

  • many chances to solo, improvise, and work in ensembles

  • rich, creative experimentation and expression, improvisation, and innovation

Enrolled families will receive:

  • 9-10 weekly, 45-minute classes (depending on the semester)

  • Animal Collection CD and Songbook, as well as downloads of all the songs we will be working on each semester

  • Access to online video tutorials and play-alongs

  • Access to online in-home activity pages

We'll explore the Tiger Rhythm with drumming patterns from Mali and India. Children will discover the enchantment of Indian music through the song "Chandamaame Raave" and even learn to sing a verse in Telugu! We'll explore body percussion, scatting, and part-singing with "Singing in Harmony." "Tiger, Tigress in the Night" will delight children with imaginative play, drumming, and dancing. And with "Tiger Tracks," we'll get to prowl and growl as we follow a tiger through his day.
